Description

Adolf Hitler Honorary Mayor Presentation Document for the City of Zeitz in Sachsen-Anhalt: This is a “1933 Ehrenburger” document that was liberated by a US veteran from Hitler’s Berghof in 1945. It was purchased from the nephew of the veteran in 2015 at the Show of Shows. The ‘honorary citizenship’ was the highest honor that a city or town could award. So many were awarded to Hitler that a specially made armoire was located at the Berghof just to house them. Each soldier in his unit was given two or three of these documents as war souvenirs. The city of Zeitz is located in the Burgenland area of Sachsen-Anhalt. It has wood covers hand bound in leather. The front cover features an extremely detailed wood inlay of the Rathaus in Zeitz done by the ‘Intarsien-Fabrik (Inlay Manufaturer) Julius Homburg, Zeitz’. Inside the front cover is the Coat of Arms of the city done in stained wood marquetry. The dedication on the next page with a swastika in the background is also completely inlaid as well. It reads ‘The thousand year old city Zeitz, in grateful adoration, awards Reichs Chancellor Adolf Hitler with the rights of an honorary citizen, Zeitz, in early 1933’, and is ‘signed’ in inlay by the Oberburgermeister. Wood inlay and bookbinding of this fine quality would take a few hundred hours of work. This superb example of German craftmanship is in virtually mint condition.
