Gau Meeting Pommern Badge Stettin 1938
Description
Stettin belonged to Germany until 1945 as a part of the state of Prussia, province of Pommern. During WW2, Stettin was a major centre of weapons industry. 65% of Stettin's buildings and almost all of the city centre, seaport, and industry were destroyed during the Allied air raids of 1944 and the heavy fighting between the German and Soviet armies in April of 1945. After WW2 the German territories east of the Oder-Neisse line were given Polish administration. Even though Stettin is located west of the Oder-River it also was given to Poland. The entire German population was then expelled from their homes to East Germany. Stettin is now the Polish town of Sczezin. The 1990 German reunification treaty acknowledged its territorial losses to Poland, one of the costs of starting WW2.
